You’ve likely heard of Simon Sinek author of Start with Why and Find Your Why. His TED Talk “How great leaders inspire action” in which he shares the golden circle showing “why” in the center then “how” is the next circle and “what” as the outer circle has over 16 million views on YouTube. In a very compelling manner, he explains the importance and priority of knowing your why. Sinek indeed strikes at the core of our lives and provides great insight and practical steps toward helping people discover purpose and the why of their lives. And while what he shares is quite beneficial, what he doesn’t touch on is the” why” that we all have in common and seek an answer to. The why of it all. The ultimate why.
Why do we exist and what is our purpose as human beings? Writers and speakers like Sinek can give you tools and insights to discover your why in life when it comes to career, goals, and purpose, but until you come to grips with and embrace the why of your existence, there will always remain a void that can only be filled when you understand this ultimate why.
It all begins with. “Hear O Israel the Lord our God, The Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. This is the first commandment. And the second, like it, is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these” Mark 12: 29-31. We all have whys when it comes to careers, purposes, and goals, but there is only one ultimate why for all of us. We are here for a reason and a purpose. Colossians 1:15-16 “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.” There it is! The ultimate why. We were created for Him to bring Him glory and honor. To love Him with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength and to love others as ourselves.
Will it be possible to glean benefits from the 6 routes that I will write about concerning rest and life balance? Yes. However, let me caution you. Pursuing a balanced life apart from living out your ultimate why in life will not lead to true rest or real life balance. More on the why of it all in the next post.
