Did you panic or want to tune me out when you saw today’s blog title? Please don’t! I despise it when a group or political movement coopt and manipulate a perfectly good phrase such as “pro-choice” to promote or further their propaganda campaigns and agendas. In the abortion debate (which isn’t a debate at all, (abortion is wrong and takes a life) those who advocate abortion hide behind the term pro-choice to disguise their motive and refer to those against abortion as pro-life or pro-lifers. If you are going to use the word pro-choice then the opposite of pro-choice is anti-choice. And, if you use the term pro-life to refer to those who oppose abortion, then it stands to reason that those in favor of abortion should be referred to as anti-life. Don’t mix terms or use a slogan or a play on words to distort the issue.
The topic I want to cover today is “choice.” Life is all about the choices we make. I am absolutely “pro-choice” in that regard. Delaying choices or making bad choices has consequences. Every day we make hundreds of decisions, many are simple choices that don’t have significant impact. Deciding what to wear, where to go for lunch, choosing a phone plan or play list aren’t life altering choices. But then there are those life changing choices that shape our character and determine our destination and destiny in life. Choice and making choices are at the core of life.
Choosing your friends, choosing a career path, choosing a future marriage partner, choosing not to compromise your character, choosing promiscuity or pornography over a life of sexual purity is a game changer. Choosing to live a healthy lifestyle eating well, exercising, enjoying rest including sleep and downtime, and balance are of vital importance. Choosing a lifestyle of consumption versus a life of contentment is significant. Choosing to value career over family or choosing to work and never rest has consequences.
I believe the most crucial factor influencing your choices in life is to ask yourself what does your decision-making matrix look like? What does the foundation look like? Your beliefs, determine your values, and your values in turn influence and impact your behavior through the choices and decisions you make.
Is your foundation based on truth or lies? Your single most important decision that determines your belief system starts with choosing to believe either in the creation narrative found in Genesis 1 and 2 or in evolution which is the basis for secular humanism. This single choice becomes the foundation stone that will lead you down one of two paths. The path you choose will then guide the choices you make in this life.
In Joshua chapter 24 Joshua says to the people of Israel “Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
