Out of Alignment?

I was a skeptic. No way was I letting someone “crack” my back and “twist” my neck. For me chiropractic care was in the category of “woo woo” medicine. But I couldn’t argue with the results that I had seen in my son, daughter, and wife. So, I reluctantly agreed to give it a try, mostly to appease my family. I have posture issues and a level of kyphosis where my back is rounded and I hunch forward, which granted is not particularly attractive, but I wasn’t in pain or suffering.

Before my first adjustment Dr. Mike took x-rays and then sat down with me for an extended time to explain and show where my issues were, how my body was out of alignment, and his proposed treatment plan. I knew that spinal health was important, but I didn’t fully realize or understand just how much our spines impact so many areas of our overall well-being. Dr. Mike educated me and took the time to answer all my questions.

So, when I scheduled my first adjustment my family was nearby and watched. I was apprehensive and found it hard to relax my body as I got on the table. About three minutes later I stood up and it was like a light switch had been turned on. “Are you kidding me?” This was not a “placebo” effect! I couldn’t believe how just one adjustment made an immediate difference. Fast forward a year and I have made amazing progress and wouldn’t think of missing my adjustment each week.  Now instead of “woo woo” I think chiropractic care is “wonderful”.

Just like my weekly adjustments and exercises help me maintain physical alignment, I’m reminded that spiritual adjustments are of vital importance for my spiritual health. The bible says we are fearfully and wonderfully made. There is a connection between our body, soul and spirit. Without sounding mystical or having you think I am advocating new age philosophy; I believe there is a biblical congruence that we can and are designed to experience.

Ever hear someone say, that guy needs an “attitude adjustment?”  Just like our bodies can get out of alignment and need regular adjustments, the same is true for our spiritual health. We need to make sure we are in alignment, and we need spiritual x-rays to reveal our condition. Are your beliefs, values, and actions (lifestyle) in alignment? Beliefs – what is right, what is true and absolute impacts our values – what is good and acceptable which then influences our behavior – the way we live (our actions.) As a follower of Jesus our beliefs, values, and actions are shaped by and determined through the truth of God’s Word. The Word of God is the x-ray machine, that reveals our spiritual condition. Does what you say you believe align with your values and behavior? Are they congruent? Anytime the three aren’t perfectly aligned you are in need of a spiritual adjustment.

I don’t know about you but while once per week adjustments work for me physically, the need for spiritual adjustments is much more frequent. I find I need spiritual adjustments multiple times a day every day. This is the foundational truth we find in John 15 where we are called to “continually” abide in Christ. Just like Dr. Mike revealed my physical condition, I must allow the Great Physician to moment by moment reveal where I am out of alignment and allow His treatment plan to transform me more and more into the image of Jesus Christ.

Amen Ralf. I wanted to come up with some pithy comment to expound on the topic, but honestly. Amen!
